What the result means
A moving meter confirms the complete microphone path.
After permission is granted, the browser opens the selected audio input and measures the changing level of the live signal. Speech should create clear movement above the quiet baseline. That confirms the microphone, its connection, the operating-system input path, browser permission and this tab are working together.
The height of the meter is not a calibrated sound-pressure reading. Automatic gain control, noise suppression, microphone distance and the system input level can all change it. Use the test to confirm a responsive signal and spot clipping, silence or unstable input before a call or recording.
Reading the signal
Look for response, headroom and a stable baseline.
Normal speech
The meter should rise promptly with your voice and fall when you stop. Moderate peaks with some unused headroom are easier to understand than a signal pinned at maximum.
Constant maximum
A level that stays near the top can indicate excessive input gain, a loud source or processing that is compressing the signal. Lower the system input level and retest.
Movement in silence
A small baseline is normal. Large or pulsing movement can come from fans, cable noise, room echo, electrical interference or aggressive automatic gain.
No movement
The browser is not receiving useful audio from the chosen path. Permission, mute state, input selection and competing applications are the first checks.
Browser-test limits
This page can confirm that audio reaches the browser, but it cannot calibrate sensitivity, frequency response, self-noise or studio quality. It also cannot identify a damaged capsule separately from a cable, interface, driver or system setting.
